Case Studies in Supply Chain Management: Getting it Right From the Start Part 1, Planning for Autologous Therapies

Consistent management and communication are the keys to success when managing the supply chain of any advanced therapy clinical trial. In this two part blog series I’ll review two case studies that demonstrate the importance of supply chain management by focusing on scaling up for commercial distribution and on packaging challenges within a cryogenic environment.

World AIDS Day 2017

December 1st is World AIDS Day. Each year, this day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic, unite in the fight against HIV, and remember those lost to an AIDS-related illness. The 2017 World AIDS Day theme is “Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships”. This theme reflects a shift in attitude from crisis toward control, and the role of partnerships in reaching our collective goals.

Transitioning to a New Biobank Model at a Time of Change: An AstraZeneca & Fisher BioServices Perspective

The AstraZeneca (AZ) UK Biobank offers long-term storage of, and rapid access to, ~1 million human biological samples (HBS) from AZ Oncology clinical trials, collaborators and commercial sources. A variety of sample types are managed including normal tissue, tumor tissue, blood/plasma/serum, urine and other excreta, FFPE blocks, glass slides and genetic samples (DNA/blood).

Determining Optimum Maintenance Temperature for Advanced Therapies, Part 1

As referenced in a previous blog post, understanding the proper method of safely cryopreserving your material is essential, but of equal importance is determining the optimum maintenance temperature. There are many factors that go into selecting a maintenance temperature that need to be weighed against cost, process, and equipment considerations. In this two part blog series, we’ll discuss four areas that need to be understood to determine the optimum maintenance temperature for advanced therapy material.

Distributed Biobanking: An End to End Solution for FFPE Tissue Block Management

The process of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedding (FFPE) emerged in the late 19th century as a valuable histological method for stabilizing and preserving the morphology and cellular details of tissue samples. Additional advantages of preserving  tissues using the FFPE technique included long term room temperature storage without fear of degradation, and if tissues were correctly preserved, FFPE blocks could be used over decades to prepare additional slides for microscopic analysis (as long as there was remaining tissue in the paraffin block) with little or no tissue degradation. Significant advances in protein and nucleic acid isolation techniques from FFPE tissues have resulted in the generation of sufficient amounts of nucleic acid which can be used in a wide range of analytical techniques for the determination of structure and function of these key biological molecules.

The Effect of Pre-analytical Variables on Plasma Samples Stored in Biobanks

Differences detected in respective biospecimen collections are more dependent on pre-analytical variables than on the inherent differences among the samples. Therefore, there is a parallel emphasis on standard protocol for biological sample collection and storage and identifying specific biomarkers as quality controls to assess the effects of pre-analytical factors on variability in the results. Mateos et al. (2016) used different, complementary proteomic techniques in separate, coordinated laboratories to search for quality biomarkers that would allow assessment of integrity and purity of plasma samples stored in biobanks.1

Halting the Next Ebola Epidemic

Prior to 2014 Ebola was mostly seen as a deadly disease, but contained in remote areas of the world with a low likelihood of spreading. However, this false impression was dispelled when the disease hit heavily populated urban areas. Suddenly the world realized the Ebola outbreaks could reach epidemic proportions, and with an average fatality rate of approximately 50%, the potential impact could be catastrophic. In response, the scientific community rushed to develop a vaccine.

Global Biobank Week: Towards Harmony in Biobanking

Hospitals, biopharmaceutical companies and academic researchers rely on biobanks and biorepositories for the most critical piece of the puzzle – biological samples and their associated data. Biobanks play an important role in enabling researchers to develop therapies for chronic diseases. They are key components in the research of new treatments and the identification of disease biomarkers from the large cohorts of patients through the collection, storage, inventory, characterization and distribution of valuable samples.

Thus, we are pleased to announce our participation at the upcoming Global Biobank Week (GBW) 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden.  GBW provides a global platform for comprehensive discussion and collaboration on activities important for biobanking and biopreservation of samples and data to improve healthcare and decrease the burden of disease worldwide.

Whether you’re managing the inventory of a freezer or an entire biorepository, we have a solution for all of your biobanking needs.  For decades, customers have relied on our biobanking solutions and services to preserve sample quality and improve efficiency at every stage of the workflow.  From sample collection and preparation, to sample analysis and sequencing, to cold storage and automation, we have the equipment, consumables, software systems, and full services needed to ensure reliable, efficient sample management and monitoring.
